Infectious Hive at HealthSouth
Going into last week’s Sitrion user group meeting, I knew the team at HealthSouth would deliver another amazing job telling the crowd how to really communicate to employees in today’s mobile world. They have such an upbeat and infectious spirit; I just love them. After the user group meeting, I had a chance to sit down and talk to Alyssa Hagan about the inner workings of HealthSouth and their journey so far, and here are a few things we spoke about.
88% vote for smartphone apps
To understand why HealthSouth went with an employee app over simply mobilizing the intranet, you need to look at the broader trend of how people spend their time digitally. In the years between 2013 and 2016, 88% of the growth went to smartphones. In other words, if people have a choice, they overwhelmingly vote for apps on smartphones. And to HealthSouth’s credit, they invested a great deal of time and energy to find out what their people really need.
Reach all employees
In the case of HealthSouth, 80% of their employees are clinical staff; they are in the hospitals – nurses, doctors, physicians - focused on rehabilitation and returning their patients to full strength. They are not in the business of working at a desk; they are in the business of helping people. And that is exactly what Hive – their employee app – does; it gives them more time with patients as they now get all their corporate and local communications directly on their personal smartphones.
Know your audience
Hive's adoption success can be directly linked to HealthSouth taking the time to really understand their employees’ needs. From the beginning, they held employee focus groups, worked with internal champions, and created personas to represent their target audiences.
Seeing their strong focus on their people, their strong executive support, and their infectious spirit, HealthSouth is poised for more great things to come! Which is important, given the direction HR and communications are taking with HR Bots on the horizon.
